THE BEST WINDOW 7 TIPS AND ADDED FUNCTIONS

Want to speed up Windows 7 and fix common errors in the process? Try out some of these awesome tips and tricks!
Burn CDs and DVDs with Windows: Before Windows 7, PC users had to use expensive (often annoying) software in order to burn CDs and DVDs. Those days are over! To start, put a blank disk into your optical drive. Then, in Windows 7, simply double click on any ISO file, which is a virtual image of a physical disk, and select the drive with the blank disk. Click ‘Burn’ and your disk will be created. It’s that easy.
Built-in troubleshooting: Troubleshooting is relatively easy in Windows 7. Microsoft has included an expanded troubleshooting interface that gives users the ability to eliminate problems at the source. To access Windows 7’s troubleshooting tools, head over to the Control Panel and click on the ‘Find and Fix Problems’ button. Under this menu, you’ll find troubleshooting wizards and other useful tools. If you’re having any sort of PC problems, this should be one of the first places you check out.

Get the most of your calculator: The Windows 7 calculator has been greatly expanded from previous versions of the operating system. Now, you can use it to calculate everything from mortgage payments to statistical data. You can also perform unit conversions and other useful calculations. To access the expanded calculator features, open up your Calculator (which can be found under the Start Menu’s ‘Accessories’ folder) and open up the ‘Mode’ menu. Here, you’ll see options like the Statistics and Programmer views. For more customization features, check out the ‘Options’ menu.

Adjust color profiles and settings: Using an application called ‘dccw’, users can easily optimize the view options in Windows 7. To access this application, go to the Windows 7 search bar and type in dccw. Using this wizard, you can easily tweak your monitor’s display settings until they’re perfect.

Dock programs in certain parts of your screen: The Windows key has expanded functionality in Windows 7. By pressing Win+Right Arrow, for example, you can shift a program to the right part of your screen. By selecting another program and pressing Win+Left Arrow, you can move that program onto the other half of your screen. This is perfect for anybody who needs to work with multiple windows open at the same time. The Windows key is the button with the Windows logo on it.

Rearrange your system tray: Sick of seeing those annoying security warnings pop up in your system tray every few minutes? In Windows 7, you no longer have to suffer through these annoying problems. Instead, simply press the tiny arrow to open up your expanded system tray and then drag any unwanted system tray options into the box that pops up. This is an easy way to make your desktop appear as clean and neat as possible.

Make text easier to read: On some monitors, text can look fuzzy and unreadable. Using Windows Clear Type Tuner application, you can fix this problem and improve the readability of text. Go to your Windows 7 search bar and type in cttune.exe.Then, follow through the wizard that pops up. This will improve the readability of your text in a number of different ways, usually by making it stand out more on your particular screen.

By implementing all of the tips and tricks listed above, you can make your Windows 7 experience as enjoyable as possible. Try out these tips today!

What operating system Do I have? A 32bit or a 64bit?

What operating system do I have? I stumbled across this dilemma when I needed to download a free file from the Microsoft website and was presented with two choices for my download. I could download the file in 32 bit version or 64 bit version, depending on which one suited my operating system.
But the question remained, what operating system do I have? You really need to know if you have Windows XP home, Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Home, Premium, Ultimate, or Business? The list goes on. Maybe you have Windows Seven. Also the average user has no idea what the difference is between a 32 bit operating system and a 64 bit so I will show you how to find out which one is running on your computer.

Lets start with some computer basics:

What is a processor?

The processor is a main component of a computer that is attached to the mother board. It is technically called the Central processing Unit or CPU for short. It is the brain of the computer because it processes all of the information and data. The bigger your processor, the faster your computer performs your tasks. If you have a 64 bit processor it would probably be reasonably fast as this is a new technology. We have also mentioned components of a computer in a basic computer terminology article.

What is an Operating system?

An operating system is the software you install on your computer that allows you to operate the computer. Windows is an operating system. If you want to find out what operating system you have then this is very simple. You need to know what operating system you have on your computer so you can download the right drivers and software that is compatible.

What Operating system do I have?

If you are wondering if you have Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows Seven, it’s very easy to find out. If you are wondering if your computer is a 32bit or 64bit then read on further down the page. People often ask me “what operating system do I have?” I would have thought this was a well known computer basics thing to know, however many do not know the answer. The average computer user does not work with all versions of Windows as much as I do so how can I expect them to know?
1.  Go to your start menu. This will apply for all Windows Versions.
2.  Click on control panel in the menu.
3.  Double click on the system icon. If you cannot see all the pretty icons press on the link to view the control panel in classic view.
4.  You will see all the details in front of you. See the screen shot below. Click on the picture to see a larger size. Here you can see what operating system you have.
The above screen shot shows Windows vista and the below shot is Windows XP. It looks different but the information result is the same. They both tell you what operating you have.
The information I can see here is:
  • What operating system I have and what version and service pack.
  • How much computer memory I have.
  • What processor I have.
  • What speed the processor is.
  • If I have a 32bit or 64bit processor. (Sometimes it is not shown on an old computer)
What Operating system do I have and is it 32bit or 64 bit?
A 64 bit operating system is an operating system such as Windows XP or Windows Vista, that has been purposely developed for a computer with a 64 bit processor. You cannot use 64 bit software on a computer with a 32 bit processor but you can use 32 bit software with a 64 bit processor.
What operating system do I have and is 32 bit or 64 bit?
  1. Windows XP
  2. Go to the start menu.
  3. Choose all programs.
  4. Then choose accessories, then system tools.
  5. Now choose system information.
See the screen shot below.
If it says x86 then you have a 32 bit operating system. If the processor area mentioned a 64 or AMD64 then this means you have a 64 bit processor. If it said Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version then this means it is a 64 bit operating system. However as you can see from above, it says Microsoft Windows XP Professional and the processor starts with X86 so therefore this is a 32 bit processor with a 32 bit operating system.
The screen shot above shows a 64 bit operating system which means I also have a 64 bit processor to allow this.
Windows Vista

In Windows Vista you can find out the same way. Start menu>Programs>Accessories>System tools>System information. You can also type the word system into the search bar in the start menu.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
What operating system do I have? Another way to see if you have a 32 bit or a 64 bit operating system

1. Go to control panel by going to the start menu in the bottom left corner.

2. Click on the system icon.

3. The information will be there.

4. See in the screen shot below I have a 32-bit Operating system.
On my laptop I have a 64 bit Operating system installed because the laptop has a 64-bit processor.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a 64 bit system?

  • You will need to install 64-bit drivers for all your add ons like your printer, usb stick, digital camera, and more. This is why people have had problems with having a 64 bit system. However as time goes on the technology gets better and more refined… Soon drivers will be available for most devices.
  • If you have a 64 bit processor and a 64 bit operating system you will have to have 64-bit software applications like office programs, picture editors, and so on..
  • There is not much compatible software available at the moment, however this is changing.
  • A Vista 64 bit operating system does not support any 32 bit software.
  • An AMD 64 bit processor supports both 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems.
  • Vista 64 bit operating system has major improvements on security features and kicks the 32 bit butt. New features that prevent and almost make system attacks impossible.
  • Vista Home Basic 64 bit supports up to 8 GB of RAM, Vista Home Premium 64 bit supports up to 16 GB and Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate 64 bit supports up to 128 GB, whereas 32 bit Vista supports 4 GB or RAM.
  • A 64-bit processor is made with more advanced processes, have more features, and of course has faster speeds.

Notes: 32 bit and 64 bit operating system

  • You can upgrade from XP 64-bit to Vista 64-bit, but not from Vista 32-bit to Vista 64-bit.
  • If you are running a 64 bit operating system then we must presume you have a 64 bit processor as well.
  • You can also type winmsd.exe into the run box for the system information box to come up.
  • You can also press The WIN KEY and pause break to open system properties. Sometimes the information is there.
  • Now that you know if you have a 32bit or 64 bit system, find out more information about your computer.

SHOULD BUY A NETBOOK(MINI LAPPY) OR A FULL-SIZED LAPPY(LAPTOP)

Should You Buy a Netbook or a Full-Sized Laptop? Portable or powerful–that is the essential choice you need to make between netbooks and laptops. But many other considerations enter into the total equation: price, productivity, operating system, risk of repetitive strain injury, and expandability, among others.

5 Reasons to Choose a Netbook Over a Laptop

  1. Portability Netbooks are much easier to carry around at work, at school, in the field, even at home. Most are the size and shape of a small hardcover book, making them ideal for anyone who likes to travel light or who has to carry a lot of other stuff.
  2. Price The most expensive single part of mobile computers are their LCD screens. Netbooks will always be cheaper than similar laptops because netbook screens are smaller. But netbooks also tend to include smaller disk drives, less memory, and less-powerful processors, making them pretty cheap.
  3. Cool Talking about temperature here, not popularity, modern laptops can become quite uncomfortably hot. (I’ve heard it joked that they’re hot enough to render a man sterile.) The less-powerful processors and solid-state storage in many netbooks keeps them at a comfortable temperature for sitting right on your lap.
  4. Durable Netbooks with solid-state disk drives (usually netbooks with 64 GB or less disk space) are much better at withstanding accidental falls than their laptop counterparts. Indeed, it seems many netbooks are engineered to withstand falls. The durability and low-price of netbooks makes them ideal for young children and teenagers.
  5. Attractive Mobile computer manufactures have learned from cell phone manufactures that people want to customize the appearance of their devices. Custom cases look good on netbooks, on large laptops, custom cases can look like you’re trying too hard.

5 Reasons to Choose a Laptop Over a Netbook

  1. Productivity You can do almost anything on a full-screen laptop you can do on a typical desktop computer. Except for a few specialized applications, laptops have the processing power and screen size necessary to support the work you do.
  2. Lowered Risk of RSI One of the most devastating and common ailments which can befall the modern knowledge worker is Repetitive Strain Injury,  a consequence of typing too much in bad conditions. Left untreated, RSI can cripple you for life, taking away your ability to type fast and possibly ending your career.Typing on an undersized netbook keyboard is a major contributor to RSI. Your author, a professional writer, had to stop using his netbook for non-trivial work after beginning to suffer RSI.
  3. Accessories Laptops include hardware that won’t fit into tiny netbooks. For example, laptops include built-in DVD players, which can make it easier to install software or to watch videos during long trips.
  4. Higher-Quality Parts Although bargain-basement laptops abound, the typical laptop is made out of higher-quality parts than the typical netbook. Laptop screens, touchpads, and keyboards usually last much longer than their netbook counterparts.
  5. Expandability Most laptops can accept additional computer memory (RAM) and larger disk drives, and some even let you upgrade the processor or wireless card. These modifications aren’t usually available to netbook owners. This is why most people think there is no comparison between a Netbook or a Full-Sized Laptop.

Choosing Between Them? Should You Buy a Netbook or a Full-Sized Laptop?

Ask yourself which benefits you need from either list above. If all of the benefits you need come from just one list, then you’re a perfect match for that type of mobile computer. But, if you’re like most people, you want some combination of benefits available in both laptops and netbooks. So how do you choose which device to buy?
We suggest that you imagine your life with both devices. Walk through your typical day holding a netbook; then walk through that typical day again holding a laptop. Focus mainly on the pitfalls of the device, but also pay attention to any important benefits.

Here are some important questions to ask when deciding if  you should buy a Netbook or a full-sized laptop:

  • Will I be typing a lot? You probably want a laptop, but if you have small hands, a netbook might suit you well.
  • Will I be using my mobile computer in a tough situation that will probably destroy it? You probably want a cheap netbook.
  • Will I need a fast processor or the screen-space of a full desktop? Consider buying a full desktop computer, but if that isn’t an option, you almost certainly want a fast, large-screen laptop.
  • Do I have space in my backpack, briefcase, or bag for a large laptop? If not, look at small netbooks.
  • Will I be playing 3D action games? Gamers will much prefer the larger screens and faster computer processors of laptops. Remember to buy an external mouse touchpads make for horrible gaming.

Should You Buy a Netbook or a Full-Sized Laptop And How Much To Spend?

A lot depends on the features you select, but the following prices apply to most netbooks and laptops available on the market in early 2011:
Netbooks most often feature screens between 7 and 11 inches with 10 inches being most common today. The smallest, cheapest netbooks often run Linux; all others (except the MacBook Air) run Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter. Expect to pay N30,000($200) or slightly less for a cheap Linux netbook to N35,000($300) for a mid-range 10-inch Windows netbook to N40,000($400) or even N45,000($500) for a high-end 10 or 11-inch netbook.
Used Laptops are easier to buy than ever before, especially through manufacturer-certified refurbishment programs. Supplies and prices vary too much to include any detail in this article, but consider buying refurbished if you need laptop features on a tight budget.
New Laptops running Windows 7 most often feature screens between 13 and 17 inches (with a few 12 and 18-inch screens). Most common today appears to be the 15-inch widescreen. Laptop prices increase significantly when they have faster processors, increased memory (RAM), or large disk drives. A common configuration today provides the laptop with a 15-inch screen, a 4-core 2GHz 64-bit processor, 4GB computer memory, and 500GB disk space for about N80-90,000($600).

WHAT IS SOFTWARE?

Software is a combination of computer programs, commands and information that enables the computer to execute different tasks. In 1958, the term ’software’ was first used by John Turkey. Basically computer software consists of digital languages that involve binary values and direct specific instructions to the computer processor. In simple terms software is what makes the computer usable.

What Is Software?

Software is program that tells the computer to perform a particular set of tasks. Without software, the computer will simply do nothing. Software is necessary for a computer to function. It helps the computer receive input, interpret, process, then communicate the output results to the computer user. Software is like fuel to a car. A car without fuel cannot run. Software not only makes your computer run, but it also is needed to perform any simple tasks on the computer.
There is software available for almost anything you want to do with your computer. There is software for picture editing, movie making, music production, watching movies or TV, and more. It almost seems never ending. It all starts with an idea. Software is usually developed with a particular task in mind. The Windows operating system was intended to improve navigation around your computer and give you easy access and control over your files. However now it also includes a media player, cd burning software, scanner and camera wizard, movie producer, system tools, and more.
The main and most important piece of software a computer has is firstly the BIOS (basic input operating system). The BIOS is a set of programs, which controls the PC hardware and is stored in a memory chip on the motherboard. The chip is a Read Only Memory (ROM) chip, which keeps its contents even when the power is off. When a computer is turned on, the CPU will execute all of the instructions in the BIOS, which are stored in the ROM. These instructions will then load the Operating System.

Programming software
It is the most common type of computer software worldwide. These are compiled tools and instructions to execute different tasks on computer. A program is a set of commands that enable a computer to undertake certain tasks.

System Software
It is a collection of operating system like device drivers, servers, utilities and windows platform. These systems play a major role in the operating of hardware. There are many brands when it comes to operating systems; Windows and Linux are common examples of it.

Application Software
It is a type of software that allows the computer user to attain specific tasks. Examples of application software are: business software, education software and database software. Apart from these software,  there are other types  including  data backup and recovery software, utility software, accounting software and inventory management just mentioned a few. This software helps a lot in the operation of computers and some of the mentioned examples are discussed below.

Data Backup and Recovery Software
The software do not only offer basic data file copying, but also provides the service of data backup and recovery according to the customization demands by the computer user. This software provides storage and organizes data allowing easy recovery. If you accidentally or by mistake lose important data, then the recovery software will come in handy. The software will save your time as you can get relevant results quickly.

Inventory Management Software
For a company that deals with tangible goods, the inventory management software will assist in a great deal. This software is designed to keep track of the stock, be it quantity or quality. It is mostly used in companies’ warehouses. It reduces the expenses of hiring human work force to keep the records for you in bulky paper work.

Utility software
This software is responsible of handling small computer tasks and also known as the service routine. Some of the tasks it performs are; virus scanning and disk defragmenters among others.
